Much-loved owner of Larbert haulage firm passes away aged 86

The much-loved founder of a Larbert-based haulage firm has passed away peacefully aged 86.

Ian Craig who founded Ian Craig Haulage in Cumbernauld on the back of a single vehicle in 1973, built the company into an operation that covers a purpose-built, nine-acre haulage and storage facility in Larbert.

His son Colin, speaking on behalf of the haulage firm, said: “Ian was a man of determination, resilience and hard work. In 1973, he began his haulage business with just one vehicle and a vision for the future. Through years of dedication and perseverance, he built a respected family business that became his life’s work.

“But behind the business was a family, and at Ian’s side was his beloved wife, who played an important role in helping to run and build the company. Together, they worked hard, faced the challenges of running a business and laid the foundations for the legacy that continues today.

“Sadly, Ian lost his wife three years ago. Her passing left a huge void in his life, and it is fitting that her contribution should be remembered alongside his. The business they helped build together stands as a lasting testament to their partnership, commitment and hard work.

“Ian was a devoted father and grandfather, and his family will carry forward the memories, values and traditions that meant so much to him. His sons, Kevin, Alan and Colin, continue the family business he worked so hard to establish, ensuring that his name and legacy live on for future generations.

“Ian’s life was about more than the vehicles on the road or the business he built. It was about perseverance, family, overcoming life’s challenges and the mark a person leaves on the world. He leaves behind a family business built through years of hard work, a family who will cherish his memory, and a story that will continue to be told.

“With Ian now gone, we hope there is comfort in the thought that he and his beloved wife are reunited once more.

“Our heartfelt condolences go to his children, grandchildren, wider family, friends, colleagues and everyone who knew Ian throughout his life. Rest peacefully, Ian.”

The family legacy will continue, as the firm is managed by his three sons, Kevin, Alan and Colin, who each serve as company directors.

Together, Kevin and Colin oversee daily operations, recruitment and transport scheduling, while Alan directs workshop activities, compliance and fleet maintenance. The company’s reputation has been built on more than 50 years of haulage industry experience.

Colin’s son Martyn is also part of the firm. After completing his apprenticeship, working in the workshop and spending two years as a driver, he is now Transport Manager and a CPC holder, becoming the third generation of the family to work in the company.
