Grangemouth centre gets £230,000 makeover to continue vital community work

Grangemouth’s Dundas Resource Centre – which provides day services for people with a disability – has relaunched following a £230,000 transformation programme.

The investment from Falkirk Health and Social Care Partnership has created improved facilities and will expand the number of people that can be supported out of the newly refurbished building.

Hazel Brooks, Dundas Resource Centre manager, said: “The transformation of Dundas has been about far more than improving a building. From the very beginning,

the people who use our service and their families have helped shape every aspect of the project, from the design of the rooms to the colours on the walls.

"Their ideas and feedback have created a space that truly feels welcoming, inclusive and designed around people's needs. The new facilities allow us to support a wider range of people, including those with complex care needs, while creating more opportunities for learning, wellbeing, independence and community participation.

"We are excited about the future and look forward to welcoming more people through our doors."

The extensive revamp includes upgraded accessible toilets and changing facilities throughout, refreshed dining and recreation areas, a transformed art and multipurpose space, a new communal kitchen area, and homely staff areas.

The spaces have been designed with the involvement of people using the service and their families at every stage. Through a series of “coffee construction days” and site visits to the kitchen design showroom, people were invited to help choose everything from paint colours and flooring to cabinet finishes and decor.

Delivering the vision was a collaborative effort too, with decorating and painting work completed by members of Falkirk Council’s Family Firm – which helps care-experienced young people develop skills and explore employment opportunities.

In addition to the refurbished spaces, Dundas continues to offer a range of specialist facilities including a fully equipped accessible gym supporting physiotherapy and exercise, a beauty room providing treatments in a familiar environment, and a training kitchen used for cooking classes and catering.

Support delivered by Dundas extends well beyond the building itself, with the service offering activities in the community, including bowling, football, cinema trips, and visits to local attractions.

The relaunched facilities are the first step in a wider programme of growth for the service and Dundas has already begun recruiting additional team members to boost capacity and enable the service to support people with complex care needs for the first time.

Plans are also in place to build stronger links with Falkirk’s Employment Training Unit to offer more volunteering, learning and employment opportunities. It is also hoped the centre will be able to open up further to the community – offering bookable spaces and welcoming in a range of local groups and businesses to expand the activities available to people at Dundas.

Andrew, who attends Dundas, said: “The new floors are much better for my electric wheelchair.”

Danielle, another Dundas service user, added: “The art room is great and nice to be in. We helped pick the colours for the paint in the rooms. I picked the colours I like – the pink toilet is my favourite.”

The centre officially relaunched with a presentation given to local councillors and members of Falkirk’s Integration Joint Board, with a community and family open day

planned soon to celebrate the transformation and thank everyone involved.
