Spectacular new showstoppers and much-loved favourites will celebrate a decade of Christmas magic as Edinburgh’s spectacular after-dark attraction sets its sights on a record 100,000 visitors, writes Graham Walker.

Imagine stepping into a magical winter wonderland, where more than a million twinkling lights dance through the trees.

Giant glowing flowers tower overhead, a spectacular new display sends shimmering spheres cascading down a hillside, and a breathtaking projection show brings the gardens’ past to life.

Then step inside the newly twinkling Christmas Cathedral, marvel at the flickering flames of the Fire Garden and discover enchanting woodland displays.

Zoe Bottrell, director of Culture Creative, is the woman in charge of creating the spectacle, today exclusively revealed the dazzling surprises awaiting visitors as she promised an unforgettable 10th anniversary after-dark trail.

Returning to the Royal Botanic Garden - from November 19 to December 30 - she says this year’s immersive lights, sounds and festive aromas experience will combine dazzling new installations with much-loved favourites, as it aims to welcome more visitors than ever before.

Zoe said of this year’s special anniversay trail: “You won’t turn a corner without there being something new to look at.

“We’ve also done a straw poll across the Edinburgh team as to which previous installations they felt were some of the best.

“So we've brought some of those back.”

But this is far more than a greatest-hits celebration, with new installations bringing fresh magic to the anniversary trail, she adds.

Among the new attractions is a spectacular projection transforming historic Inverleith House into a winter canvas, incorporating archive imagery from the Royal Botanic Garden.

Another breathtaking showstopper will bring an entire hillside to life with individually programmed LED spheres, sending waves of shimmering colour through the landscape and trees.

“It is using a whole series of LEDs, which means we can individually pixel programme every single element of it,” Zoe explains.

“Using that with the trees, the hill and the shape of the landscape, we really bring that whole landscape to life.”

Visitors can become part of the magic themselves.

“We have a brand new piece called Inbloom, which is an interactive piece that people can participate in and actually be part of that light installation,” Zoe reveals.

New chandeliers will also illuminate the John Hope Gateway.

Towering above visitors will be the return of TILT's magnificent Peonies – giant colour-changing illuminated flowers standing over six metres tall.

“We've got TILT coming back, bringing their most famous peonies, which are fantastic,” enthuses Zoe.

An entire avenue of trees will burst into a dynamic light show, while 10 specially selected trees receive anniversary illuminations.

“There are 10 special trees that have been highlighted by the arboretum team. They have all been highlighted in a special way.”

A special 10th anniversary logo will also be projected onto the ground at locations around the trail.

Returning favourites include the Christmas Cathedral, Fire Garden, Starfield and enchanting 12 Days of Wicker, with Father Christmas also set to make an appearance.

The Christmas Cathedral, a shimmering tunnel of thousands of delicate lights, has become a favourite backdrop for family photographs, romantic moments and even marriage proposals.

And there's extra sparkle this Christmas.

“What we have done over the last couple of years is we've begun to make our Christmas cathedrals twinkle,” says Zoe.

“So we trailed it last year and now all of our UK Christmas cathedrals will twinkle.”

The Fire Garden also returns in a new location.

Visitors can expect specially curated music, dazzling illuminations and tempting festive aromas, with opportunities to toast marshmallows or enjoy mulled wine.

Her top tips to get the most ut of your visit?

Allow 60 to 90 minutes, wrap up warmly and wear sensible footwear.

And Zoe believes the real magic lies in sharing precious moments with loved ones.

“Photos and selfies are all the rage, but also just actually soak in the atmosphere that's around you and be there in the moment as opposed to wanting to record it for everybody else all the time,” she said.

Behind the festive magic lies a remarkable international operation.

Culture Creative works alongside leading promoters RG Live, part of Sony Music UK, to bring spectacular illuminated trails to audiences around the world.

This season, Culture Creative expects to deliver around 350 individual artist installations across approximately 15 UK locations, seven in America and two in Australia, having previously worked in Austria, France and Italy.

And the creative ambitions extend beyond Christmas, with Halloween trails and exciting new international projects being explored.

For Zoe, however, Edinburgh remains somewhere special.

“It’s a jewel in the crown,” she says.

“I think visitors love coming to the garden and seeing it in a way they never would during the summer.”

The scale of Edinburgh's transformation is extraordinary – around 18 installations, more than a million lights and 20 kilometres of cabling illuminating a mile-long (1,500-metre) trail.

But protecting the precious landscapes and wildlife that make these spectacular trails possible remains a priority.

Modern LED technology helps reduce energy consumption, while proceeds from ticket sales help to support the Royal Botanic Garden's horticultural, scientific and conservation work through income from tickets, food and drink.

Zoe sums up the philosophy beautifully: "The only thing we should be leaving behind is footprints and memories."
