Falkirk karate club celebrates double medal success including Marek Kolesar's gold
A Falkirk karate club is celebrating a remarkable double medal success after two of its members returned from Brazil with gold and bronze medals.
Shoshin Karate Club’s Marek Kolesar and David Marandola both reached the podium at the JKS International Cup & Para Cup in Vitoria.
Eighteen-year-old Kolesar, from Falkirk, was crowned JKS World Para Champion 2026 after winning gold in the Para Kata competition.
The 1st Dan black belt has been training for seven years and has enjoyed a rapid rise through the sport.

After success at Scottish and British level, Kolesar became JKS European Para Champion in 2025 and has now followed that up by becoming world champion.
Reflecting on his latest achievement, Marek said: “Dreams really can come true.”
There was also a bronze medal for 49-year-old David Marandola, originally from Larbert and now living in Paisley.
The 4th Dan black belt has 36 years of karate experience and is an assistant instructor at Shoshin. He had stepped away from competitive karate in recent years to concentrate on his work as a referee and judge.
In fact, Marandola was carrying out those duties at the Brazilian event before deciding to return to the competition floor and enter the Kumite.
His decision proved worthwhile as he fought his way to an international bronze medal.
“It’s all still a blur after the medal presentation,” said David. “To be able to compete in this competition, never mind win a bronze medal, is a very proud moment.”
Shoshin senior instructor Richard Steen said the club was hugely proud of both competitors.
He said: “I am absolutely over the moon for Marek and David. Both of them train so hard on a regular basis and to medal at this international event is a fantastic achievement.
“I am so proud of them both and the talent and inspiration they bring to our club.”
Shoshin Karate Club runs classes in Falkirk, Larbert and Throsk and is affiliated to JKS Scotland and Karate Scotland.
