Falkirk boss John McGlynn on why he made later substitutions during Kilmarnock win

John McGlynn on Kilmarnock victory, top Falkirk performances and why he made later substitutions.

John McGlynn hailed scores of “good individual performances” after his Falkirk side cruised to a 3-0 victory against Kilmarnock to make it two wins on the spin in the Scottish Premiership for the first time this season.

The Bairns, who previously won 2-1 at Easter Road against Hibs to end a run of conceding late goals, tackled tough weather conditions in style to beat Neil McCann’s team at home on Saturday.

In-form American forward Jacob Murrell made it four goals in three games, heading home brilliantly from a 38th-minute corner to help Falkirk earn another three points.

That was the Bairns’ second goal, with the striker also playing a key role in the opener nine minutes earlier, with his knock-on being diverted home by visiting defender Cathal McCarthy.

Another own goal, this time with 22 minutes remaining in the second half, made sure of the victory with George Stanger flicking home Deniss Meļņiks’ header.

John McGlynn hails Falkirk team after Kilmarnock win

“We played the conditions, I think. That’s what you had to do on the day,” delighted boss McGlynn said. “We played it better than them, did the basics better.

“In conditions like that, it’s what you have to do and we make no excuses for that. But there were a lot of really good individual performances in our team.

“Finley Barbrook was excellent in a different position. Big Deniss came into midfield and did so well. Jacob got a couple of goals there. It’s a huge three points for us, it gets us further away from the bottom.

“That’s 12 points from 10 games. We managed to get 15 points from every 11 last season. So we have got one game left and there’s potential to equal what we did last season.

“That would be a great statement while building this new team. If we could do that, I think it would be quite a good achievement in a short period of time.”

Former DC United ace Murrell made it five goals in just eight Premiership outings with his header - and McGlynn highlighted the forward’s confidence after settling down to life in Scotland.

He said: “Jacob is very confident now. Like everything else, you come from America and you’ve got to adjust. Loads of things are different, even driving on the other side of the road he’s got to get used to.

“He’s living in Glasgow. He’s now settled down, he’s comfortable and his form is really good. Couple of goals last week, another one today. He takes the header really well, a carbon copy of the goal he scored at Tannadice from a corner. From my point of view, long may that last.”

Unusually, McGlynn elected not to make any substitutions until the final stages of the match, and he revealed why when asked if it was with a busy week in mind. Falkirk travel to Aberdeen on Wednesday before hosting Celtic on Sunday.

But that wasn’t why he didn’t choose to freshen up his team - hinting that the recent concession of late goals was still in his mind, with weather conditions also coming into play.

“It’s a different team this season... last season I kind of knew exactly what was going to happen (when I made changes). I am still a little weary. Sometimes you make changes and you can lose the momentum that you have in a match. It can happen.”
