Falkirk Schools Debating Challenge gives young voices a platform
Young people will be able to share their ideas and build public speaking skills at the Falkirk Schools Debating Challenge this Friday.
The challenge aims to help young people recognise that their voices matter while gaining the confidence and knowledge required to participate in democracy.

The competition will be held at Larbert High School on Friday. Pupils entering can build their confidence and put their public speaking skills to the test as they develop persuasive arguments and learn about how democracy works in the UK.
Participants are encouraged to look beyond the headlines and use evidence and research to create convincing arguments. Their quick thinking and listening skills will also be tested as they reply to opposing views, which will help them work on skills that are important in education, the workplace, and public life.
Jon Reid, director of education at Falkirk Council, said: “Debating brings together so much of what we want for our young people: curiosity, confidence, clear thinking and the ability to work with others. It challenges pupils to explore a subject in depth and explain their ideas in a way that others can understand.
“The benefits extend well beyond the event itself. Learning to assess evidence, question an assumption or respond thoughtfully to a different perspective helps young people become more independent learners and active participants in their communities.
Falkirk MP Euan Stainbank said: “Young people have important things to say about the world around them, and they deserve opportunities to be heard. The Falkirk Schools Debating Challenge is a chance to put their ideas in the spotlight and show what they can do.
“A strong argument takes more than confident delivery. It means doing your homework, listening carefully and being prepared to answer difficult questions. Those skills matter in every career available to young people, but they also matter in everyday life.
“I hope the challenge encourages pupils to back themselves, be curious and engage with views different from their own. I appreciate the opportunity to work with Falkirk Council, local businesses and partners to bring this opportunity to young people in Falkirk”.
