Muiravonside lands £6.25 million to fix canal breach

The section of canal burst its banks after torrential rain and thunderstorms battered the country and the 30 metre wide breach caused part of a towpath to be washed away.
The incident had a huge impact on the Edinburgh to Glasgow railway line and resulted in train services being suspended for a number of weeks.

Hide AdAt the time teams from Forth Rivers Trust had to rescue a variety of freshwater fish and return their natural habitat in the canal.
Now the breach will be fixed thanks to the government cash injection – part of a £19.95 million allocation for improvement works on Scottish Canals.
The capital investment from Scottish Government will also see essential upgrades take place throughout the canal network, safeguarding the heritage assets for the future.
