Aberdeen 0-1 Falkirk: Ben Krauhaus is Bairns' hero as John McGlynn's side win three in a row
Falkirk produce Pittodrie win against Aberdeen to make it three William Hill Premiership wins in a row.
Falkirk produced another solid Pittodrie showing to make it three wins on the spin in the William Hill Premiership for the first time since 2008 on Wednesday night.
The Bairns earned a 1-0 victory against Aberdeen thanks to Brentford loanee Ben Krauhaus scoring his second goal for the club since joining in mid-July.
The attacking midfielder climbed off the bench and was the matchwinner on his return, stabbing home Ryan Strain’s ball across with 17 minutes remaining. Much like his opening goal against Hearts last month, it was a deft, accurate finish.
And another three points, on the back of wins against Kilmarnock and Hibs, sees John McGlynn’s move into the top six with 15 points from 11 outings matching last campaign’s impressive figure.
Unsurprisingly, Bairns boss McGlynn named the same starting eleven that had eased past Neil McCann’s side at home last Saturday.
And it was a comfortable enough start at Pittodrie for the visitors as they looked to extend their unbeaten top-flight run in Aberdeen having won 1-0 and drawn 1-1 last campaign in their maiden season back in the Premiership.
Barney Stewart was the hero on the last visit - heading home a last-gasp leveller to deny Stephen Robinson what would have been a first win for him as Aberdeen gaffer.
The Bairns’ backline did have some early scares in this one, with the first big chance of the match coming after 17 minutes when Leon McCann made a superb block to deny home forward Kevin Nisbet.
The striker got a decent connection on the ball but the left-back McCann made a good block to send the ball wide, with Scott Bain eventually collecting a tame header from Chris Cadden after the hosts recycled the play.
Up the other end, winger Ethan Ross was Falkirk’s most threatening attacking force in the opening half hour and he created a decent opportunity for an opener when he darted inside the box and fed the ball across - but no-one in white was there to meet the ball in front of goal.
The game at that point came to life, with defender Liam Henderson being bailed out after he slipped and allowed Ayoub Mouloua to turn and shoot in the box. The centre-back - who did have to go off a few minutes earlier for head knock - was happy to see his goalkeeper Bain collect what was in truth a weak effort.
Finley Barbrook, playing again in the No 10 role, then had a go at goal after Derby County loanee Owen Eames did well to make space for a cross. The Ipswich Town loanee’s shot took a couple of deflections before reaching Marius Müller in net.
Former Hibs full-back Cadden had another effort at goal, five minutes before half time, this time collecting the ball on the edge of the area. His strike was well-blocked by Scott Tanser - who was not long on the pitch after replacing McCann, who picked up an injury and was forced off.
Up the other end, Ross again was causing all sorts of bother. He picked up the ball and forced Müller into pushing a low effort wide for a corner kick, with a resulting header from Latvian international Meļņiks’ again forcing a good stop from the German stopper.
The hosts had a small spell of pressure before half time, with Nesta Guinness-Walker and Moroccan Mouloua both blasting over efforts in the Bairns’ penalty area before the break.
In the second half, it was another slow start to proceedings. In-form Murrell did have a decent chance to score when he sent a header wide of target after being found by Ryan Strain, who fed the ball to him after a quick breakaway.
The next chance came on the hour mark, this time for Aberdeen. Guinness-Walker broke free out on the left and eventually cut inside before going for goal. His effort was an easy save for Scotland stopper Bain. Soon after, ex-Kilmarnock midfielder Brad Lyons had a go from range but his shot flew well over the bar.
Boss McGlynn then made two substitutions to change things up with Ben Parkinson and Brentford loanee Ben Krauhaus coming on for Meļņiks and Murrell.
And it worked. After 73 minutes, the Bairns opened the scoring through attacking midfielder Krauhaus in front of the travelling Falkirk supporters. He was in the right place at the right time to finish past Müller after right-back Strain did so well to pick him out in a crowded penalty area.
After grabbing the opener, McGlynn’s team tried to go for a quickfire second to kill the game. A fast counter attack saw Eames dart forward, with his effort being blocked. The home defence then cleared another strike, this time from Ross.
With 10 minutes remaining, the Bairns boss then brought on loan duo CJ Fodrey and Conor McLeod for the impressive Ross and Eames.
And Falkirk continued to go for a second goal. But in the end, they didn’t need one. Some excellent gamesmanship in the final moments ate up the clock, with the players then able to celebrate with the fans who made the longtrip north.
Next up for the Bairns is a home match this Sunday (1pm kick-off) against Martin O’Neill’s Celtic.
