Camelon’s goal hero Flynn recalls sending Mariners to Scottish Junior Cup Final 25 years on

Two goals from Davie Flynn sent Camelon into their second ever Scottish Junior Cup Final in 1995 - against a defence which included someone who’d become a familiar face for the Hibs child welfare officer.

Camelon semi-final hero Davie Flynn remembers his goals fondly – and even more so the bus trip back south from Dundee!

The Mariners forward still keeps in touch with his old team-mates – and one vanquished opponent – of a very successful period for the Carmuirs Park club.

Flynn, who spent three decades in the police before becoming child welfare officer at Hibs, remembers a tight-knit squad on and off the pitch.

He told The Falkirk Herald: “It was a great time and a great bucn of boys and it was a great side Brian and George [Fairley] had built . We were close off the pitch too and had great social times - we still keep in contact now.

“I got my couple of goals and it was a strong performance all round but we held out at the end with them coming back to 2-1. Back down the road was a great bus trip back and joyous celebrations when we got back to the club.

“There were 4000 but a fair few travelling up from Camelon and they certainly made noise and their presence felt. For Lochee it was a home game. Camelon was well-represented for supporters travelling up to a midweek game.

“The club did us proud and had Slaters through for new suits –we were well prepped. It was a new thing for Camelon going to the final and it was exciting time for the little club.

“We were quiite successful that year and in the cup - they are great memories to have. We ended up winning the league on the final day after we won the cup - and that was against Whitburn too funnily enough - them or us in a league decider after the cup final and we managed to beat them then too.

“It’s unfortunate that we can’t get together with things the way they are just now.”

But the team still keeps in contact via group messaging chats but one figure from that night in Tannadice is still a familiar face to Flynn – Jack Ross.

He laughed: “I’m at Hibs now, and you know who the manager at Easter Road is –- my old- team-mate from Camelon Jack Ross. And funnily enough before he was at Camelon he was at Lochee and part of the team we played that night at Tannadice!”
