West Lothian residents warned to watch out for fires in warm weather

West Lothian Council and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have teamed up to encourage everyone to take every effort to reduce the risk of fire at this time.

The current dry conditions mean that fires are more likely to start and spread, with all residents asked play their part in preventing fire spreading where possible.

To report a fire, please always call 999 as soon as possible.

West Lothian Council leader Lawrence Fitzpatrick said: “The current good weather increases the risk that fires pose to people and property across West Lothian, and I’d encourage everyone to do what they can to prevent it.

“If you spot a fire, please report it via 999 to make sure it can be put out as soon as possible. Similarly, please take extra care that you do not accidently start a fire, such as making sure cigarettes and barbecues are safely extinguished.

“We would also urge anyone considering setting a deliberate fire to think twice before carrying out such a reckless action. In dry and warm conditions such as we have now, a fire can spread easily and pose serious risk to life.

“West Lothian also has some fantastic scenery and amazing wildlife that we can all be responsible for keeping safe from fire.”

Paul Harvey, Watch Commander with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service added: “The smallest outdoor ignition can spread rapidly and we want to make people aware of how quickly things can get out of hand.

“Please act responsibly when enjoying the outdoors and think twice before using anything involving a naked flame.

“Deliberate fires in particular have a huge impact on our crews and can divert them away from genuine emergencies, where lives may be at risk.

“We work with partners such as schools to educate young people especially on the dangers of fires, and would encourage parents and carers to discuss fire safety with their young people.”
