Strathcarron staff uploaded a video of Mr Thomson’s reaction to the message – footage which has since been shared more than 1000 times on social media.

In the original video, Clarke addresses him directly and says: “Willie, I saw your picture on Twitter.

“Fantastic to see you with that smile on your face. Says what it means to everybody in the country.

“I hope you enjoyed the night. I hope you're proud of the boys, their performance.

“And we're certainly proud of you.”

The hospice had tweeted a smiling image of Mr Thomson to the national team in reaction to their win in Belgrade on Thursday night.

On Saturday, Strathcarron was inundated with well wishes from Facebook and Twitter users after it shared footage of the moment he was shown Clarke’s statement.

Beaming with pride and joy, Mr Thomson is filmed saying: “I'm so proud of you.
