Bo'ness timber firm donate to town's Car 4U service

Bo’ness Car 4U was overwhelmed by the efforts of staff at the town’s Walker Timber who raised an incredible £6923 for the charity.

That block of cash amounts to almost one third of the charity’s annual running costs.

An Active April challenge saw staff clock up an impressive amount of miles, top of the league table being Chris Dickson who tallied up a massive 814,342 steps alone, covering 407 miles.

Lorna Shanks, Walker Timber office administrator, said: “We had 58 participants who took part in our Active April challenge.

“Our parent company Miller Homes gave us £1 towards our chosen charity for every mile that we each walked, both during work hours and in our own time. Each employee recorded their steps and submitted them at the start of each week. By the end of April, we’d raised £6923 for Bo’ness Car 4U.”

A grateful team from the charity recently collected the donation and explained just how much it means.

Publicity officer Val Ferguson said: “It’s not the first time Walker Timber has supported us so we’re incredibly grateful for such a large donation, every penny of which will be spent taking cancer patients on journeys to and from hospital.

“It probably amounts to one third of our running costs for a year which helps take the pressure off as we know that money is in the bank.

“I can’t stress enough how great the people and businesses in Bo’ness are, doing things like this under their own steam to ensure we can continue providing the service.”

Bo’ness Car 4U launched its free hospital transport service for cancer patients registered at GP practices in the town in January 2021.

Val added: “We are now approaching 2000 journeys clocked up in the last five and a half years, mostly to the Beatson in Glasgow, Forth Valley Royal and Edinburgh hospitals.

“We couldn’t do what we do without the support of our volunteers and incredible fundraisers.”
