Polmont’s Hazel Beattie may be best known locally for her work behind the scenes with organisations such as Falkirk Youth Theatre and Sing Forth Community Choir.

But while her day job involves nurturing other people’s talents, Hazel will get the chance to showcase her own considerable vocal ability when she performs as part of Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival.

I t’s always a little bit nerve-wracking, but it was great last year and I’m sure we’ll enjoy it this year too

The company she belongs to, Edinburgh Music Theatre, is performing two cabaret style reviews of show-stopping classics, one featuring songs from Disney and the other numbers from much loved Broadway musicals.

The highly regarded theatre company is following sell out success at last year’s fringe, with the two shows.

First up, Fringe Fantasmic promises fun for all the family in a concert of classic and current songs from the house of mouse, with sing-along favourites from shows such as The Little Mermaid and the Lion King.

Then the stage will be set for an evening of musical theatre’s greatest moments delivered by Hazel and her fellow performers.

With live music, stunning harmonies and a selection of the most rousing hits from the Broadway, it promises to be a spine-tingling evening of entertainment.

Hazel, who has been a member of Edinburgh Music Theatre for nine years now, recently also became Chairman of the Board of the company, which gives a platform for people of all ages to showcase their talents.

Her experience as arts development officer with Falkirk Community Trust – specialising in dance and drama – made her a natural to help with the organisational side of things.

But while she’s very happy behind the curtains, being in the company allows her to indulge her love of performing while balancing family life and work.

“It’s always a little bit nerve-wracking, but it was great last year and I’m sure we’ll enjoy it this year too,” said Hazel.

“It’s always the case that when you start rehearsing it seems really far away and then suddenly you can’t believe it’s nearly here!”

Fringe Fantasmic and Anthems: Broadway Showstoppers will be performed by Edinburgh Music Theatre at St Andrew’s & St George’s West Church, George Street, Edinburgh on August 12, 13 and 14. The Disney songs are from 7.10pm, while Anthems start at 8.40pm.

Tickets are £10/£8 concession £5 child or book for both shows and get one half price.
