Girls are flying flag at Dance World Cup

A Scottish team is competing in the Dance World Cup for the first time this year '“ and a local dancer has been chosen as the team's flagbearer.

Serena McCall (13), from Maddiston, will lead the Scots in the opening parade, alongside 3000 competitors from another 37 countries.

Serena, who trains with Central Scotland Ballet School, was chosen as flag bearer by the judges, who were impressed with her performances in the heats.

Serena, who will compete in classical ballet among other styles, picked up an award for Best Classical Solo in her bid to be selected for the event.

Joining Serena at the prestigious event will be CSBS dancers Dayna Lipski (17), from Standburn, and Laura Stirling (13), from Larbert, who will both be competing in hip-hop.

All three girls are members of CSBS’ competitive team Starshine Elite and will be representing Scotland at the ECU European Championships in Vienna.

The girls’ dance teacher, Amanda Clark, said: “The girls are super-excited but very nervous. They know the standard is incredibly high.

“I am nervous too but I just want them to have a great time and enjoy it. It’s going to be an incredible experience.

“It is perhaps going to be the biggest competition they will ever attend.”

The competitions will be streamed live, so the girls know that back home their fellow dancers at CSBS will be cheering them on.

The Dance World Cup opened in Jersey on Saturday and runs for a full week.
