Last time I visited the ’50s, it was because I was watching Marty McFly in ‘Back to the Future’.
Confused and dazed from his 30-year time travel, Marty swings into the diner in Hill Valley with tall stools, leather seating booths, clean counters and a juke box playing.
Milkshakes and burgers are on offer.
Fast forward a few years and there’s a new addition to the Falkirk food scene where you can capture the 50’s atmosphere and learn a wee bit more about baseball.
Cake, Shake, Wrap ‘n’ Roll on Upper Newmarket Street says it’s devoted to people who love to laugh and live to eat.
The experience is definitely a fun one, with comfy booths and a range of milkshakes like caramel and parma violet served in old-style glass milk bottles.
The home-made fluffy cupcakes are temptingly on show, and favourites include Nutella Corner and Funnel Cake.
In fact, it was when word of chef Mick McGuckin’s cupcakes started to get around that he was told he should open his own place.
Six weeks from opening, this 1950’s style American diner has already hit some home runs with locals.
In the main events like the burgers and meat wraps, there’s a commitment to the quality of the food and how it is prepared. Meat, include pork and chicken, is slow-cooked in a water bath which is believed to be the only one in a Falkirk eaterie.
The result is succulent, tender meat, and the pulled pork, which can be served in a bagel, wrap, roll or baguette, is becoming a favourite with regulars.
The majority of the food is prepared from scratch, from the hash browns that feature in the All Star American breakfast, to the desserts that add a sweet treat to finish your meal.
Colesaw and dressings all prepared on the premises, and it comes as no surprise to learn that Mick’s passion is fine dining.
The burgers, ranging from the Thanksgiving Burger with fresh chicken and smokey bacon lettuce and cranberry sauce, to the Babe burger with juicy pork and the colossal burger - commonly known as the flagship burger for Cake Shake.
The Colossal burger is just that, filled with juicy beef, and strips of the premises’ specially created New York-style pastrami. You can also further load your burger with the restaurant’s own mustard, ketchup, choice of sauce and dressing.
There’s also a kids’ menu for the under 12s which includes a mini nibbler sandwich with a choice of meat and sauces and the home-made ‘slaw’.
Snacks and meals can be washed down with a range of hot or cold drinks, from the speciality teas and lattes to milkshakes, ginger beer or fresh orange.
So if you’ve misplaced your DeLorean and fancy a taste of the 50s or just a tasty treat, Cake, Shake will do its best to help you out.
