Dunipace rower Cameron Buchan is hoping next month’s World Championships can help propel him on to Olympic glory.
The 24-year-old – in his first year as part of the GB Rowing senior squad – will travel to the USA at the end of September as part of a 64-person squad that also includes Olympic Gold medallists such as Moe Sbihi, Katherine Copeland and Will Satch.
Buchan has been named as a reserve but hopes the overall experience will stand him in good stead as he looks to force his way into contention for a place at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and – closer to home – the 2018 European Rowing Championships which will take place in Strathclyde Loch as part of the first-ever multi-sport Glasgow 2018 European Championships.
He said: “There’s so much experience within this team and just being part of it, I can draw on how the older guys operate and hopefully use that as I make progress towards Glasgow 2018 and the 2020 Olympic Games.
“This is my first year and some of the guys have been going closer to 10 years so it’ll be interesting to watch and see how that experience helps during a major championship. It’ll be a big benefit to me.”
This year’s World Championships squad sees a number of exciting youngsters breaking into the British senior ranks.
Cameron is looking to continue a great year which has already seen him clinch his first senior silver medal, in the men’s eight at the opening World Cup of the 2017 season.
And he’s looking forward to Glasgow 2018.
Cameron said: “I get messaged from my friends at school and my family saying ‘When are you racing close by?’ and I have to tell them I’m competing in the USA or Poland. So racing at Strathclyde Loch would be a completely different experience for me, racing in front of people I know rather just having my parents there. I know the course well too; I rowed there during the Commonwealth Regatta in 2014 so it’ll be great.
