Grangemouth Stags made their usual trip north last Saturday to take part in the Orkney 7s and retained their shield.
As is usual for the party travelling north from Glensburgh, there was a mix of firsts, seconds, guests and youngsters.
However, on a warm spring-like day, Grangemouth struggled in the pool matches and clearly jet lag was affecting their performance. Allan ambled in for three tries in the opening match before the Stags cameup against a strong Peebles team to lose heavily. They won the third match to go into the cup quarter final against the hosts, Orkney.
The home side were quickly two scores up but the Stags fought back to lead midway through the second half.
However a couple of late tries meant the Stags were into the Shield semi-final. This was won at a canter and then in the final the Stags dominated the East to retain the shield.
The Stags presented a quaich to their hosts for their 25th year of participation in the competition. It is now the player of the tournament prize and handed to Sam Croy.
Squad: S Allan, F Clyne, K Forsyth, C Hendry, A Hind, DJ Innes, A Mncube, T Rutherford, G Scott and G Taylor.
Meanwhile back on the mainland the 2nd XV season rumbled on. The 2nd string made the short trip toBo’Ness and returned with a 45 -13 victory. This week the Stags 2nds travel to Anstruther to take on Waid with a 3pm KO.
On Saturday night the club are holding the annual awards dinner. Tickets available from Gordon or James.
