Bonus point as Falkirk see off Ardrossan

Ladies Day at Falkirk rugby club saw a packed clubhouse, and a bonus point awarded to the Cala Park club.

Beauty treatments were order of the day in the clubhouse, but though the Sunnysiders remain on course in the battle for the league title with a hard-fought 30-24 win over Ardrossan Academicals - it wasn’t pretty.

Only a late tackle from makeshift winger Aubrey Mncube and Logan Bonar halted a on-man breakaway from the visitors with tow minutes to go which would have almost certainly consigned Mark McKenzie’s side to a home defeat.

But they held on and Pa Thompson’s try on the hour saw them through.

Falkirk were missing Nathan Watts and Matt Morrell but their omissions didn’t affect the opening which saw the home side coast into a 17-0 lead.

Alex Penman kicked a penalty after four minutes before adding conversions to tries from David Lyle and the excellent Niall Lear.

Just before the break Ardrossan scored an unconverted try and on the whistle, Graham Gillilands did likewise.

The home defence re-emerged from the interval but were caught napping with another unconverted try, followed quickly after by a converted score to bring the Cala Park scoreboard to 22-17, but another Penman penalty extended the margin slightly.

It was quickly uncomfortable though as in response to Penman’s kick, Accies attacked, got over the line and then kicked the conversion to trail by a single point.

Thompson’s battling try in the corner was too awkward for Penman to add extra points to - but was enough to register a bonus point on Falkirk’s league table.

The late breakaway was halted by Mncube with two minutes to go, much to the relief of the Sunnyside crowd and Falkirk coach Mark McKenzie, who admitted basic mistakes were risking his side’s progress. “They showed character to get the win though,” he added.
