Falkirk Fury round-up: Young teams get the better of Glasgow Rens as under-16 women shine

Falkirk Fury had all of their SBC Division 1 sides in action over the weekend from senior level down to under-14s.

The under-18 junior men secured a big 79-48 point win over Glasgow Rens on the road and remain top of the league with a 4-1 record for the season. Point guard Jack Shand is averaging 14.8 points per game and forward Daniel Velykyy just behind at 14.2 points, with those statistics helping them sit eighth and ninth respectively for scoring in the league. Both 18-5 and 25-11 periods were key for coach Keith Bunyan's side with Velykyy and Alex Low sharing 28 points, while Alex's younger brother Dylan hit 13 points personal and Shand had ten points personal. Fury under-18s face Ayr Storm at Grangemouth Sports Complex this Saturday with a 4pm tip off.

Fury under-16s cadet men had a 40 points win over Glasgow Rens with a 86-46 scoreline. Second and third periods of 23-8 and 22-7 were key in putting this match beyond doubt and moving the cadets side to third in the table with a 3-2 record.

Coach Ewan Carlow's side had the games top 32 scorers with guard Adama Hainey leading all players with 21 points personal, James Henderson hit 20 points and the ever improving Oliver Coffey scored 18 points.

This Friday sees an exciting double header at Grangemouth SC as before the Fury versus St Mirren senior men's clash - Fury cadets face Inverness Lions in a 5.15pm tip off in the second round of the Scottish Cup. Spectators are welcome to both games on Friday.

Fury under-14s boys made it four from four for Fury men's teams with a 70-53 win over capital side City of Edinburgh Kings. Jay Bunyan top scored for the Falkirk side with 18 points personal with Will Claydon on 14 points and Lewis Dickson and Jack Webster sharing 24 points. A 14-7 start in the first quarter gave Coach Greg Foussas the building block for the win against an equally talented Kings side as the quarters remained tight throughout.

Meanwhile, Fury’s senior women lost out to Caledonia Gladiators by a 75-32 scoreline. Former Junior Eve Balloch led Fury with nine points personal and despite the loss they will take positives going into Saturday's game at GSC against City of Edinburgh Kool Kats.

Falkirk Fury’s junior women were defeated 91-22 over the weekend by a clinical West Lothian Wolves.

Fury pair Edie McBain and Daisy Lawson scored six points personal apiece. The Fury JW side had six of their ten players playing their second game of the day and that showed as the match progressed.

This weekend sees Rebecca Lonsdale’s side face St Mirren with a 10am tip at Grangemouth Sports Complex.

For Fury’s under-16s women, it was a different story against West Lothian Wolves in their cadet women’s game as they came away from Bathgate with a convincing 80-35 points win to remain undefeated for the season and joint top of the league with a 4-0 record.

Kim Hunter's side took control in the second stanza with a 30-7 scoreline for a 51-19 half time lead. Wolves were held to single figures in the third and fourth periods, to give Fury a whopping 45 point victory.

The match saw Fury's Poppy Duncan top score with 21 points personal in 23 minutes. Rachel Dagger had 20 points with Bethany Sneddon and Kyla Torrance sharing 2o points between them.

Sneddon moves to third top scorer in the league with an 18.5 points game average and Poppy Duncan to seventh with 13.5 points. Inside the top 20 scoring charts are Rachel Dagger in 11th with 15.3 points, Kyla Torrance in 14th with 11.3 points and Daisy Lawson in 15th with an 11 point average.

This weekend sees Fury’s CW face St Mirren at GSC on Saturday with a noon tip off.

Completing the Falkirk club's eight game SBC Division 1 weekend was Fury’s under-14 girls side, who moved to 3-1 for the season with a 84-46 win over City of Edinburgh Kool Kats.

The Falkirk side won all four periods, culminating in a very strong 30-10 final quarter.

Millie Irons led Fury with 19 points personal with Scarlett Smith on 15 points, Tia Quinn on 14 points and Jodie Lamberton 12 points.

All ten players got on the scoresheet and the team which comprises 75 per cent of first year players can once again reflect on a great team performance.
