Disrupted season doesn't stop Fury recognising individual successes

Sony Centre Fury Basketball Club recently carried out a blended awards weekend to honour all the great work done by players, officials, coaches, volunteers and partners last season.

The Player of the Year was Makaleb McInnes who not only shone on the court, leading Fury Men to their 13th National title, but carried out an amazing role for the club, coaching players within Fury and at their partnership basketball academy at Falkirk High School.

A fan favorite, McInnes was a fantastic advert for US college basketball as he displayed his skills for Fury.

The Volunteer of the Year award went to Valeria Vacca, who led the clubs extensive table official program.

Valeria volunteered every week-end of the season, officiating across the club's National League home games in all 16 teams age group matches and had tremendous support from a great group of a dozen young Fury players.

The Team of the Year was Fury Senior Men who won the 18-19 Division 1 Championship and reached the Semi-Finals of the Play-Off Championships, which were not completed due to Covid-19.

Club Coach of the Year went to Fury Senior Men & Senior Woman's coach John Bunyan who led the Men to their Scottish Championship title and the Men and Woman's teams to the Play-Off Semi Finals - both not completed due to Covid-19.

The International Player of the Year, an award that extends from current to former Fury players, was awarded to Ali Fraser for his outstanding season with pro BBL side Glasgow Rocks.

Fraser led the team in scoring, with the Rocks leading the BBL Championship with only a couple games to be played before Covid-19 ended the season with the Championship becoming void.

The Margaret Bunyan Memorial Trophy – which is awarded to a player, supporter or official who has given outstanding service to the club or achieved outstanding results in basketball. winner was Senior Men’s player Bryan Munnoch.

Bryan joined the club as a nine year old and has won more National titles for Fury than any player - eight as a junior and 13 as a senior.

Bryan was also on the Scotland Cadet team with five other Fury players when the Scots won the Euro C Championships.

An International player at all levels, Bryan typifies the dedicated and committed club player who is Fury through and through.

The Stars of the Future awards for male and female players went to Andrew Melville and Emily Melrose, both Scotland Internationals with outstanding potential.

Andrew was also selected to represent Scotland at the JrNBA Europe Camp in 2019 and played in a junior Euro League after being scouted at the camp.

Emily Melrose played for all three of Fury's top National League teams in season 19-20.

Emily was Cadette Captain, taking her side to the Scottish Cup Final and also played in the Fury JW team that also reached the Cup Final at U18s.

Emily was also in the Fury SW team who reached the Semi-Finals of the Play-Off Championships - an athletic forward, both Emily and Andrew have both shown they have what it takes to become great players as they progress in the game.

The Provost of Falkirk Young Coach of the Year award, donated by current Provost Billy Buchanan and in tits second year of presentation, was won by Cameron Stewart.

Cameron has well as playing in Fuy's Junior team, volunteered to work with the club's U16 Boys team 2 and throughout the season matured into a coach with a lot of understanding for his players and the game and is a well deserved winner of the award.

The Bobby Kinzer Endeavour awards, named for former Solripe star Bobby 'Special K' Kinzer who kindly put his name to special awards to young players who have made an outstanding contribution to the club, went to Eve Balloch, Olivia Mitchell and Abby Reid for their coaching with the younger Fury teams, not just during the season but during Covid-19 at outdoor and indoor sessions - a great commitment by all players, who gave up their time to help develop Fury's youngest.
