Girl power meets pedal power for racer Doran

A young Falkirk racer has created motorsport history '“ as she and fellow driver Amy Dziurzynski became the first women in a major UK feeder series to be classified in a 1-2 podium.

Christie Doran, from Carron, chased down London-based Amy in the final VAG Trophy round of the weekend at Brands Hatch as they came first and second in their class.

Now it has been confirmed that the feat if the first of its kind in British motorsport. The British Women Racing Driver’s Club has scoured its records and confirmed the result – while it is believed the nearest result in the past was Louise Richardson and Sarah Moore, who finished first and third in the Ginetta Juniors in 2010.

Lorraine Gathercole said: “The British Women Racing Driver’s Club are delighted to confirm that, to the best our knowledge, last weekend’s achievement by Amy Dziurzynski and Christie Doran signified the first Class one/two by lady drivers in a mixed race. Our congratulations ladies.”

The feat is all the more remarkable given that Christie and Amy are the only two girls on the 30-strong grid. The series is considered a stepping stone in the British Touring Car Championship and British GT.

Christie – who is part of the Macdonald Inchyra Hotel and Spa development programme for young talent in Falkirk – has achieved top-three finishes at all three rounds of the VAG Trophy this year, despite it only being her second ever year in a UK series.

She said: “I have to be honest and say I didn’t think about two women being on the top two steps at the time but it is a great feeling now that it has been confirmed. There are some great women racers but it will always be Amy and me who did this first.

“I am the youngest female to race in the VAG Trophy so far, the first to get a trophy and now this - that is a pretty good treble!”

Christie - who is backed by Stirling-based Fly High Pole Fitness and Magnate Property - added: “It was a great race. Amy had a big battle with another racer, Simon Tomlinson, up ahead and I was just waiting to see if I could pick them off.”

Christie already holds the accolades for being the youngest ever female to participate in the series at only 19 years old and was the first female to win a championship trophy back in 2014. She admitted: “I would have liked the win, but this is still very special.”
