Shire look at signing trio

John Sludden is starting signing talks with a number of players as he aims to strengthen his player pool for East Stirlingshire's Lowland League challenge.

The Shire coach says it is possible that one new face may arrive at the club in time to play in this week’s game at Civil Service Strollers but he says there are three players who he’s currently in discussions with.

One is almost certainly Andy Rodgers. The former Falkirk front man is currently on loan from League 1 Peterhead, a deal that expires at the end of August.

With the 32 year-old Rodgers set to become a free agent as the transfer window closes a move to Shire would be a logical next step, and both parties look keen to make it happen, but nothing has been signed as yet.

Sludden could certainly use some bulk to his squad; he has lost key defender Ross Fisher to work commitments and the experienced Scott Buist is likely to be out through injury for some weeks yet.

Last Saturday against Hawick Royal Albert he didn’t have enough players available to fill the bench, but Sludden will not rush into anything.

“We are looking at three players,” he said. “At the moment these are very early enquiries but we are always looking to improve the squad so we will just have to see where that takes us but we could have someone in before Saturday.”
