Stenhousemuir boss Gary Naysmith says his side can be proud of their efforts in the SPFL Trust Trophy on Tuesday night despite exiting the competition at the hands of a Rangers B sporting £10 million worth of talent.

The Warriors made the short trip to Stirling’s Forthbank Stadium for the fourth round tie, and they went down 4-1 to a side that included the likes of Ibrox first-teamers Ianis Hagi and Danilo.

A goal from each alongside a Findlay Curtis double sealed a quarter-final spot for David McCallum’s team, with Blair Alston’s second-half stunner only a consolation.

Fourth round ties were played earlier this month but Rangers postponed the match until this midweek due to international call-ups.

Stenhousemuir are set to pocket £20,000 in prize money, with the Warriors’ run in the competition seeing them dump out local rivals Falkirk in previous round.

On the tie against Rangers B, Naysmith said: “I wouldn’t have expected to see Ianis Hagi or Danilo. It was probably the strongest team they could have put out.

"Even guys like Leon King and Bailey Rice have been around the first team.

"But I thought we did really well in the first half. The performance was good much like Alloa last weekend.

"Rangers were clinical and the gap between the two teams was apparent later on but I have to be happy with the guys’ efforts.

"It was a tough match to prepare for; you can’t work out who is going to play and getting footage of their matches is difficult.

"In the end the game could have been close than 4-1. We now look forward to playing a tough Kelty team.”

Meanwhile, Stenhousemuir confirmed earlier this week that Gordon Thompson is the club’s new chairman.

Having recently rejoined the board of directors, he steps up to the same role he previously held before taking time out of football.

David Reid, vice chairman, said: “I am delighted with the appointment from a personal point of view, as are the rest of the board members.

"It gives us a chance to reset ourselves behind a new vision, one which I am sure Gordon will relay to you in the fullness of time.

“I am sure you will join me in congratulating Gordon and wishing him every success in the role.”
