Junior Cup round up: Linlithgow shocker, Pollok stunner

Linlithgow Rose and Bonnyrigg Rose were on the wrong end of stunning Scottish Junior Cup defeats

Just a week after their heroics at Ross County, Rose were sent crashing out of the competition when they lost 4-1 at Kilwinning Rangers.

A nightmare first half saw Rose fall behind after just five minutes when a mistake by Jamie McKenzie allowed Bryan Boylan to beat ‘keeper Ally Adams with a spectacular overhead kick.

Davie McGlynn’s men were really up against it when Tommy Maitland fired the ball into the top corner from 18 yards after the half-hour mark.

And Dean Agnew put the home side in dreamland when he rifled home third from 20 yards seven minutes later.

Kevin Kelbie gave Linlithgow a lifeline by reducing the deficit six minutes after the break, but the visitors could make no further inroads and Paul Stewart made the game safe by heading a fourth five minutes from time.

Meanwhile Pollok came out on top in spectacular style in the battle of the West and East Super League leaders as they demolished Bonnyrigg Rose 5-0 on their own ground.

Bonnyrigg had made a momumental effort to get the game on but it was Pollok who drew first blood when David Winters headed them in front just before the quarter-hour mark.

Pollok doubled their advantage on the hour through Paul Gallacher and the game was finished as a contest two minutes later when Winters got the third.

Gallacher got his second and ‘Lok’s fourth on 70 minutes and substitute Robbie Winters made it 5-0 with 10 minutes left as Bonnyrigg were beaten for the first time since August.

Rossvale’s brave and historic run to the last 16 came to an end as they went down 4-0 to 2014 winners Hurlford United.

Rossvale fell behind after 24 mintes and the home side went two up six minutes from the break.

A disputed penalty 11 minutes after the restart scuppered any hopes of a ‘Vale comeback and a fourth goal followed nine minutes later.

Of course it wouldn’t be Scottish Junior Cup tie without the weather having some effect.

Carnoustie Panmure’s clash with Auchinleck Talbot was an early casualty on Saturday morning and snow forced a short-notice call-off of Camelon’s match with Kelty Hearts.

Elsewhere Beith came from behind to beat Petershill 3-1 while fellow Ayrshire side Kilbirnie Ladeside made it through to the last eight with a 2-0 success away to the last remaining North Region survivors Hermes and Arthurlie eased to a 3-0 win at minnows Darvel.
