The first chance came Falkirk's way after 12 minutes. Morrison's cross from the right was met by Anton Dowds whose shot was deflected towards Alston in front of goal but he shot into the side netting.

But the Bairns did hit the front within three minutes. Alston's initial wicked inswinging corner from the left was cleared by the Sons defence but Alston gathered again and crossed for Morrison who volleyed in at the back post.Falkirk nearly doubled their lead in the 28th minute. Alston's brlliant long range effort beat home keeper Kevin Dabrowski but rebounded off the bar. The follow up shot by Robbie Leitch only just missed the far post.

Falkirk had another opportunity on 38 minutes when Leitch’s shot after a Kelly cross was deflected comfortably into Dabrowski’s arms.

The last action of the first half saw Falkirk's Paul Dixon booked for a crude foul on Adam Frizzell on the nearside touchline.

Sean Kelly's inswinging 56th minute corner for the visitors seemed to trouble Dabrowski who tipped the ball over.

A Dumbarton breakaway on 61 minutes saw subs PJ Crossan and Denny Johnstone link up superbly but Johnstone’s effort on goal struck the right post.

Charlie Telfer – on for Leitch – sent a long range effort wide before the Bairns made a double substitution on 65 minutes with Aidan Connolly and Akeel Francis replacing Dowds and Morrison.

Johnstone headed wide for the hosts from a Robert Jones set-up, before Wilson also nodded off target from a Jones cross.

It was 3-0 Falkirk when the home defence failed to clear a ball forward and Connolly rounded Dabrowski and slotted into the empty net.

Dumbarton came agonisingly close to pulling one back three minutes from the end when Bairns keeper PJ Morrison got down superbly to turn Johnstone's shot round the post.

At the other end, Telfer produced a fine long ranger which Dabrowski turned wide.

The Sons wasted a great chance in injury time when Jones' effort from a Wilson pass was deflected beyond the left upright.
