Falkirk carry a three-goal cushion into the match which Hibs must make up at home to Queen of the South. If they did, and goal difference was level as was goals scored, it could come down to head-to-head record meaning the John McGinn penalty incident that Houston criticised in October could yet come back to haunt the club.

He said: “If we don’t make second I will be really disappointed even though we have reached the play-off which has been our target this season.

“My disappointment has never been about the players It’s about the injuries that have hampered us this season. I’d love a full squad – with Peter Grant, Conor McGrandles and Will Vaulks who is suspended – to pick from for this game.

“But we keep going, take it one game at a time as we have done, and we’ll deal with it.”
