The 40-year old replaces Lee Johnson, who he was previously assistant manager to at the Robins, following his dismissal last month.

Holden took control on an interim basis for the final five games of the Championship season and guided the team to eight points from a possible 15 and a 12th place finish.

Having worked primarily as a coach and assistant it is only former right backs second spell in charge of a club following a brief tenure at Oldham Athletic in 2015.

During his playing career the Englishman turned out for Bolton Wanderers, Oldham Athletic, Peterborough United and even Icelandic side Valur before moving to the Bairns in January 2007.

He spent two seasons at the Falkirk Stadium making almost 50 appearances and scoring two goals.

In January 2008, Holden suffered a broken leg in a 1–0 home defeat to Celtic which saw him miss the remainder of that season and the beginning of the next.

The following summer Holden left Falkirk and moved to Shrewsbury Town and went on to represent Rotherham United, Chesterfield, Walsall and Rochdale before hanging up his boots.
