Bairns co-manager David McCracken had already told the Falkirk Herald he’s not expecting to do much transfer business over the next four weeks and Deans has now confirmed that to be the case in an interview for Falkirk TV.

That’s not because the Bairns are on their uppers due to lack of ticket income over the last nine months and can’t afford to bankroll a big-bucks recruitment spree but, rather, because McCracken and co-boss Lee Miller reckon their current squad is strong enough to secure promotion to the Championship with only a modest amount of tweaking.

Though they’ve only taken one point from the last four up for grabs, having suffered their first loss of the season to Airdrieonians on Saturday, December 19, then been held to a goalless draw by Partick Thistle on Boxing Day, they’re still four points clear at the top of League One with 21 points from 10 games.

"It’s up to Lee and David. There are a couple of positions where I know they want to be able to strengthen, but there’s no need for wholesale changes,” said Deans.

"In terms of where we’ve been over the last few years and the amount of turnover we’ve had with players, it’s probably right we don’t have wholesale changes because that’s where we’ve suffered in the past.

"We’ve got a good strong squad. It will need strengthened in key areas – that’s what the guys have concentrated on – but there won’t be massive ins and outs.”

Tje 56-year-old added: "Ultimately, it’s up to David and Lee. We back their judgement and, so far, that’s working.

"The guys are doing tremendously well. They’ve put together a really strong squad, I think stronger than we’ve had, and we’re sitting top of the league so we’re happy. We’d like a wee bit more clear blue water at the top, but hopefully in due course, that will happen.”

McCracken previously told us: “We've looked at the squad and we're happy with where it's at.

"We've got good numbers and good quality. There's a lot of players for a lot of positions.”

Scottish football’s transfer window opens this Saturday, January 2, ahead of Falkirk playing East Fife away at 3pm at New Bayview, and closes on Monday, February 1.
