SPFL no vote could cost clubs dearer than reconstruction

Falkirk chairman Gary Deans believes clubs have opened themselves up to more risk by rejecting reconstruction plans.

The Bairns’ place in League One was confirmed last week when the final set-up changes were voted down, but Hearts and Partick Thistle have now taken their enforced demotions to court. They’re seeking re-instatement or a multi-million pound compensation package after the league ended early.

Mr Deans told The Falkirk Herald: “Clubs have exposed themselves to risk. They’ve opened themselves up to challenge and now potential financial penalties.

“The way this could have been avoided was to vote for reconstruction.”

Falkirk have long backed re-alignment in the leagues, and were previously advocates of the play-off system.

This term they have backed a re-shuffle, and would have been promoted to an expanded Championship under both the mooted 14-14-14 proposals and the 14-10-10-10 grouping that was voted down last week.

The Bairns finished second in League One last season, one point behind Raith Rovers in first place when the leagues were abandoned in March.
