Joking John Hughes claims Falkirk should have built a statue of the former Bairns boss in his honour after keeping them in the league and sending the Bairns into Europe for the first time in 2009.

Speaking on the Football Daft podcast, Yogi regaled the panel including wrestler Grado and actors Christopher Toal and Stephen Purdon, with a host of hilarious tales of his time as a player and manager.

He included one story on the negotiations for his departure from the Bairns when making the move to Easter Road as manager 11 years ago.

Hughes said: “When I was leaving to go to Hibs they couldn’t do the deal but they said give up the three bonuses and that could be the compensation for a move to Hibs.

“We’d just kept them in the league, qualified for Europe and were in the Scottish Cup final [against Rangers].

“I said to myself ‘I’ve worked my socks for that, I’ve done everything and after everything I’ve given to the club and they’re asking me to do that?’

“That’s when I turned around and said ‘Give up my bonuses? You should be building a statue of me!’ It still rankles with me a little bit.”

Hughes was speaking on the podcast after Falkirk fan and show producer John McInally revealed the former Bairns defender and boss was his dream guest. And his dreams came true with the boss appearing on episode 57 last week.
