Two goals from in-form Mark Millar denied Hamilton revenge for last week’s Ramsdens Cup final defeat.
Falkirk had the majortiy of the ball in the opening period but there was little in the way of chances for either side as half-time arrived with the match still goalless.
The game turned after 57 minutes when Hamilton No. 1 Hutton was given a straight red for bringing down David Weatherston in the box.
Millar confidently rifled the ball past sub keeper Currie to give the Bairns the lead at The Falkirk Stadium.
And just two minutes later he struck again to leave Hamilton, who have not scored against Falkikrk this season, with a mammoth task.
Willie Gibson went close to making it 3-0 then Jon Routledge should have pulled a goal back but curled his shot past McGovern’s post.
But is was all over in the 81st minute when top scorer Farid El Alagui added a third.
With Dundee drawing against Queen of the South, Falkirk made up some ground in the fight to finish second.
