The Benchman is perplexed that paying punters couldn’t fill the empty seats in the home end on Saturday.
SUMMER FOOTBALL: Saturday, May 2 and we were freezing. It was almost impossible to hit the correct keys on a computer keyboard. People had left their homes expecting a warmish day – wrong. It just shows that a Scottish summer is hard to predict. Snow was forecast for later in the day.
UPS AND DOWNS: You can’t beat the last game of the season for tension and nerve-shredding excitement. The late extra time goal by Sheffield Wednesday that denied Watford the Championship title was a classic example.
NEW KIT: The new Falkirk kit has caused a fair bit of discussion. It is simple and very like a polo shirt- but it does look good. The key factor for many will be the choice of shorts and socks. Falkirk had a great away kit in the past with navy shorts and red shorts.
AND THE WINNER IS....What a clean sweep from Craig Sibbald at the Falkirk F.C. Awards Dinner. He was struggling to hold them all for the photographers. He is on such a roll that I was really surprised he didn’t win the final 50/50 draw of the season. Maybe he just let Will Vaulks win it.
MANAGER OF THE SEASON? Ex Bairn John Hughes has had a few ups and downs during his managerial career. Success with Inverness C.T. stands in stark contrast to his time at Hartlepool. Whatever your views of his time at Falkirk, Hibs and Livingston, you can’t ignore him. He wears his heart on his sleeve and that might just have won him a few votes.
ANSWERS: The mystery player last week was Ernie Winchester, the former Aberdeen centre forward, and the club that transferred John Clark to Falkirk was Stoke City.
JEFF ASTLE: Heard a really moving interview with Jeff Astle’s daughter on the radio about her dad’s illness that led to his premature death at the age of 59. The death was recorded as an “industrial injury and opened up a huge debate about the effects of heading the old leather footballs that absorbed water so easily. The programme was well-produced, very balanced and certainly very, very moving in its description of Jeff’s decline.
TEASER: Bournemouth are in the news with their Championship win, but which Falkirk player was transferred to Dean Court and then bought back to Brockville?
