The Benchman talks stadium royalty and identity crises

IT’S A FUNNY OLD GAME: Falkirk looked a far better side when they won 2-1 at Broadwood than when they beat the same opposition 3-0. It took a long time to break the Bully Wee down and Jim Duffy felt his side were hard done by. The superior fitness eventually told and that second goal was the killer.

HOME AND AWAY: A home game at an away ground? Falkirk can now add Alloa to Stenhousemuir and Broadwood on the list where they have been the home team in recent years. The classic pub quiz question comes to mind. Who scored a goal for the away team on his home ground and it wasn’t an own goal?

FORFAR ON THE MAP: Well done to the Loons for putting their team and town on the map. Before the Rangers win, they were famous for bridies and Strathmore Spring. Allegedly, Station Park is the league ground most visited by the Royal Family - apart from cup finals. For years, we all hoped that the results would contain the immortal coupling of Forfar 4 East Fife 5. Now people will know where the town is.

JAG: Listened to an interesting interview on Five Live between Danny Baker and James Alexander Gordon, who used to read the classified results on the radio. Turns out that the young JAG was taken to games by his dad and his uncle. They were both big Falkirk fans and his early memories were all of Brockville Park.

ALLOA HAWAII: I recall being at The Recs to see The Shire win promotion to the old First Division in 1963. The best Alloa memory is of the John White Lounge. John was the subject of a transfer tug-of-war between Hibs and Falkirk. Both clubs bid exactly the same amount, but Falkirk threw in a case of malt whisky. Deal done- and the rest, as they say, is history.

ANSWERS: The Celtic player jumping for the ball was Bobby Collins, in a match against Partick Thistle, and the team that beat Rangers 12-4 over two legs was Eintracht Frankfurt in the European Cup of 1960.
