Falkirk 0 Connah's Quay 1: Bairns out of Irn-Bru Cup

A goal within seconds of the second half starting was enough to see the visitors progress at the Bairns' expense.

New manager Ray McKinnon was well received before kick-off by Falkirk fans, with the 1637 inside the stadium cheering at the sound of the new man's name.

The return of Joe McKee to the squad, and the line-up, alongside Tommy Robson will have pleased fans, too.

On the pitch there wasn't as much for the Bairns fans to cheer.

Connah's Quay had a few first half openings, going close on five minutes when Declan Poole dragged wide from six yards after Falkirk struggled with a long throw-in.

Petravicius had Falkirk's best first half chance on nine minutes when he lobbed just wide after getting in behind. The Lithuanian had an effort from just inside the box easily saved five minutes later.

Michael Wilde attempted something inspirational in a first period devoid of creativity as he chipped the ball up and volleyed over from just outside the area on 25 minutes.

And ten minutes later the Nomads had the best chance of the opening 45. Craig Jones' cross was perfect for striker Wilde, but he headed onto the roof of the net from close range.

Into the second half and things got worse within a matter of seconds as Craig Jones' free-kick was headed in by Wilde for 1-0 to the Nomads.

The game became feisty after the Welsh side took the lead, and Falkirk nearly retaliated immediately.

Lewis Kidd's effort from outside the box was blocked on it's way to goal just after Petravicius had an effort blocked.

Ciaran Dunne came on for his first minutes of the season replacing Joe McKee.

Scott Harrison skimmed a header wide as the last ten minutes approached, and Dimitris Froxylias' free-kick was easily gathered.

But the Bairns failed to grab the equaliser, with Connah's Quay holding on to progress to the third round of the Irn-Bru Cup.
