Former East Stirlingshire and Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says he encouraged Brian McClair to become the new SFA Performance Director.

McClair joined the Hampden ranks last week and among his vast remit, he will be responsible for overseeing the Performance School programme which includes Falkirk’s Graeme High.

The former Manchester United, Celtic and Scotland forward left a position with the Old Trafford club’s academy to take over from Mark Wotte.

And the legendary manager Fergie - who played for Falkirk and managed the Shire - welcomed the appointment.

“He came to see me and I said I think you should take it Brian, I think it’s a great challenge for you,” he said, speaking to the Scottish FA.

“Going back to Scotland is a big change for him but he looked upon it by saying ‘I think I can do something here’ and I agreed with him.”
