Cook double puts the heat on Warriors' rivals

Alan Cook was the flavour of Stenhousemuir as his goals secured the Warriors a fighting chance of safety in League One with a vital win over Cowdenbeath at Central Park.

The Warriors now sit a point ahead of their weekend hosts with one game to play and one of the Blue Brazil, Brechin, or Brown Ferguson’s men will finish the season in ninth.

But a vital victory over the Blue Brazil hoisted Stenhousemuir furthest away from the drop zone and it was all thanks to mercurial midfielder Cook, and ex-Cowdenbeath middle man Jon Robertson.

Yet Stenny went into the interval behind despite a confident performance – as demanded by boss Brown Ferguson.

“They did everything that was asked of them,” he said. “They played with no fear and that’s not often the case for too many teams at this stage of the season with so much at stake.”

The Warriors though, have given themselves a real chance of survival thanks to a much improved second-half where they turned their dominance into goals, and more importantly, points.

Craig Sives gave the home side the lead in the first half, rising at the backpost to head past Colin McCabe without much of a challenge. It caught the Warriors rearguard cold and, at the break, the Blue Brazil were gaining the upper hand on both Brechin, Forfar and their opponents, who spurned a couple of good chances for _______.

However Cook gave them a taste of what was to come with a headed equaliser on 70minutes and Jon Robertson added another to send his side ahead against his old employers.

The points were secured when Cook again stroked in the third and moved Stenny into seventh in the table going into Saturday’s final weekend fixture against Albion Rovers who have designs on the promotion play-offs.

It’s in the Warriors’ hands with a point advantage, but Cowdenbeath play Stranraer and Brechin meet Forfar who were relegated as a result of Saturday’s results and defeat to the Coatbridge Rovers.
