Camelon 1-2 Brora Rangers: Tale of two halves as Mariners miss out on dream tie with Hearts

After weeks of attempting to have their Scottish Cup First Round tie played Camelon and Brora Rangers finally saw out 90 minutes on Monday night.

Unfortunately the result didn’t go the way of the Mariners who dominated the first half and took a 1-0 lead in to half time but capitulated after the break and finished the match with nine men, losing 2-1.

Westfiled Park, home of Dunipace, was the venue as Brora made the long trip down from the Highlands and had the game taken to the for the opening 30 minutes.

From kick of it was Camelon who showed confidence, skill and bravery as they looked hungry for their place in the Second Round and a dream home tie against Hearts.

The Marniers took a deserved lead on 20 minutes when Mark Stowe played a lovely cross across the six yard box where David Morrison knocked it in.

Stowe’s skill was causing problems for the visitors and the former Falkirk youngster did well to turn his defender inside out on the break on 40 minutes before crossing to Morrison in space who forced Malin in to a good save with his shot from the edge of the area.

Despite not being at the races in the first half Rangers nearly snatched an equaliser on 45 minutes but a superb save from Scott Law prevented Tom Kelly from scoring with a header from point blank range.

That was a warning for the hosts but they were playing well and riding high with one eye on the next round but the tables turned and it was Brora who dominated after the break.

They should have made it 1-1 on 50 minutes but Bjorn Wagenaar fired wide of an open goal from 12 yards after Law had palmed a Jordan MacCrae cross in to his path.

The visitors went on to find the equaliser 15 minutes later as a Keir McCaulay slip on the greasy artificial surface let MacCrae in on goal and the striker brought his side level with a composed finish past Law.

Things went from bad to worse as Camelon were reduced to ten men three minutes after conceding when Greg MacPherson brought down Wagenaar at 25 yards when he was in on goal however their was plenty dispute from the Mariners’ players and bench that he was not the last man.

Brora continued to dominate and went ahead on 74 minutes as Mark Nicholson rose highest to head home a Wagenarr free kick at six yards.

The final blow came on 89 minutes when Camelon were reduced to ten men as Scott Law was caught in possession after a pass back and hacked down MacCrae after the striker robbed him of possession.

Law was shown red and, having already used their allotted subs, Stephen Docherty played the final minute plus injury time in goals and Brora secured their spot in the second round.
