The surprise gift is to help sustain the community club during the Coronavirus lockdown.

A spokesperson from The Gala Day Committee said, “We are happy to be able to help out in the community in any way.

“The work that The Warriors carry out on a daily basis is incredible and as a community we need to back initiatives like this to ensure that our most vulnerable residents have the support that they need.”

Iain McMenemy, Chairman added: “This incredibly generous donation came right out of the blue. We are all immensely grateful to the Gala Day Committee for thinking of us. Our mission statement at the club is to be a professional football club with the community at its heart, and it is clear that the individuals involved in the Gala Day Committee share this philosophy.”

“Right now, the football club faces an uncertain future due to all football operations closing down for the foreseeable future.

“However, whilst we may not be able to provide football for the community at the moment, we have diverted our efforts to serving local people in a different way, through our Community Help Initiative.

“The donation means we can deploy our full-time community staff on to this project and keep our van delivering food, shopping and support to local people during this
crisis.

“We now have over 140 volunteers out there shopping, walking dogs, picking up prescriptions and keeping in touch with over 100 local people who need a bit of support. As well as this, we now deliver over 900 school meals as well as dozens of food parcel deliveries.”
