Bo'ness United chairman Iain Muirhead has died at the age of 45.

The heartbreaking news comes before the club’s South Challenge Cup tie against Beith on Saturday afternoon, which has now been postponed.

A spokesperson for the club said: “We woke today to the tragic news of the sudden passing of our chairman Iain Muirhead.

“Words cannot really express how much of a shock this was and we send our deepest sympathies to the Muirhead family and his many friends and acquaintances.

“Iain was a long time committee member who followed in his father Jock's footsteps in becoming chairman of the club.

"It is definitely a football family with his mother Irene also involved as the minute secretary and canteen lady, and his sister Heather who is currently serving on the committee.

"His children Jay, Connor and Shane were also fans and attended matches whenever they could.

“In his time as chairman he always sought to push the club forward, and he was a real driving force in the efforts to secure a club license and gain promotion to the Lowland League.

“Iain will always be remembered by everyone at Bo'ness United, may he rest in peace.”

Scottish Lowland League chairperson League chairperson, Thomas Brown, said: “This is terrible news for Iain’s family and friends, and also for everyone associated with Bo’ness United.

“It was a privilege to have met him several times since his club joined the Lowland League two years ago.

“He will be sadly, sadly missed and the thoughts of everyone connected with the Lowland League are with his family, friends and everyone at Bo’ness United at this difficult time.”
