Benchman: Half-time pie was cordon navy bleu!

A pastry delivery was finger-lickin' good for the Benchman during Saturday's Bairns match.

LATE, LATE SHOW- AGAIN

I can’t recall a season with so many stings in the tail, but thankfully this time we were on the right side of the outcome. Blair Alston has scored some vital goals for the club, but this one could be so vital. The news from Recreation Park was the icing on the cake.

MASTER CHEF

The second half was under way when the ubiquitous media man Connor Park arrived with a box of pies for the assembled press pack. Five star rating was assured when each pie was accompanied by a choice of sauce. Egon Ronay stars are on their way to Westfield. Tweets, social media posts and radio updates from all strangely went silent for five minutes or so.

STOKING THE FIRES

He is now hailed as the key player to “fire Hibs back into the Premiership”, yet the Easter Road side admit that he wasn’t fit when he arrived from Parkhead. What? This guy was being paid as a professional footballer and he hadn’t kicked a ball in the first team since August. The wages kept coming in as he sat in the stands. In hindsight, the player’s best days were when he was at Falkirk where he looked unstoppable at times.

THE FALKIRK FAMILY

Good to see the Bairns support rallying round the family of Gordy McFarlane and they have already raised a significant sum to help with modifications to his house to enable him to return home. Those who know him will appreciate the tremendous amount of work he did for Falkirk F.C. and just how much the club meant to him. It was obvious by the welcome given to Gordy by every player and manager Peter Houston at last Saturday’s match. “Happy with that Gordon,” the manager asked him in the press room afterwards. “Brilliant Peter, sir,” was the reply.

ANSWERS

Last week’s mystery pic was Mel Charles of Wales. Coventry City signed the teenage Gary Gillespie from Falkirk.

What can you say that hasn’t already been said? Why bother with them. Just make it up as you go along. Dear TV company, when would you like us to play this week?

THE X FACTOR

Hampden was awash with wannabe singers, dancers and acrobats last week as the auditions for the TV show were held. Some hopefuls obviously needed a bit of direction.A juggler? Up in the Nevis Suite. A singer? Go to the cafe. A dance troupe? That’s in the auditorium. Clowns? Go to the SPFL Offices on the top floor..

CLAUDIO RANIERI

Whatever happens between now and the end of the season, there is only one winner in England, surely? Favourite to be the first managerial sacking. His team favourites for the drop. The Tinkerman emerges as a shrewd tactician, a master motivator and a calming presence. His team is exactly that- a unit working for each other and running their socks off.
