The Bairns boss expressed his desire for two new defenders earlier this week, but had concerns the Bairns would only net one before the transfer deadline.

But they moved quickly and just a day later snapped up Conrad Balatoni on a four-month deal.

The defender, best known for spells with Partick Thistle and Kilmarnock, spent the early part of this season playing as a trialist at Airdrie. He spent last season at Ayr United who knocked back a five-figure sum for his services in January.

He goes straight into the selection pool for the weekend’s Irn-Bru Cup match in Sligo.

Houston previously admitted he had submitted a list of targets to the board, complete with agents’ contact details, but he was cautious he may only land one of his two targets.

The other name being linked with the Bairns is Hearts stopper Jordan McGhee, as revealed by our sister paper, the Edinburgh Evening News yesterday.
