DARREN Dods was a stand-out for Falkirk in the win over Brechin - and nodded in the winner.

The Bairns ground out a 2-1 victory in Glebe Park to progress to the Ramsden’s Cup second round draw that takes place today at Hampden.

In an impressive first half, Falkirk were clearly dominant from the start and deservedly took the lead on 26 minutes when Dods headed Mark Millar’s free-kick to defensive partner Rhys Bennett. The on-loan Bolton mad squeezed the ball in from close range.

Then the captain got in on the act on his way to a man-of-the-match performance, nodding in another Millar free-kick.

But Brechin hit back through David McKenna before the break, and the hosts re-emerged a tougher proposition and controleld the second half.

But although they looked the likelier to score, Falkirk’s defensive duo kept them out for the duration of the second half.

“I don’t think Michael McGovern had a save to make,” said Steven Pressley.

Craig Sibbald was a late substitute for the Bairns coming on for Blair Alston as the young Bairns tired.

Elsewhere Stenhousemuir slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Partick Thistle and East Stirlingshuire’s rookie squad put in a battling performance at Dumbarton yesterday before slipping out of the cup.
