The 24-year-old, a leading member of both Edinburgh Fencing Club and the Wallace Fencing Academy in Linlithgow, has become the first Scot in 27 years to win the British Championship Epee title.

His victory in London, against the elite of British fencing, follows an amazing few months for Calum.

In January, he became the first man ever to win the Scottish Open three years in a row and he then went on to win the Merseyside Open in February and the Birmingham Open in March.

Calum hails from Linlithgow where he started fencing at Linlithgow Academy’s Wallace fencing club at the age of 11, coached by Bert Bracewell who still fulfils that role today along with Graeme De Sainte Croix.

When he went to Edinburgh University to take a degree in Mathematics, he had considerable success with the university fencing club. He became its captain and led his team to win the Northern Premier University League and third place in the UK University Championships.

His success and leadership was recognised by the university when he was awarded a full Sporting Blue in his final year.

While at university, Calum was also Captain of the Scottish team that won Bronze in the Junior Commonwealth Games in Jersey in 2012.

Calum, who works as a computer programmer in Stirling, hopes that his achievements to date as a successful and ambitious amateur sportsman can attract the kind of sponsorship he needs to progress further in his sport.

The Wallace Fencing Academy comprises the Linlithgow Academy school fencing club, Linlithgow Primary school fencing club and the Linlithgow Adult class.
