Bulgarian pro joins Falkirk Fury

The 23-year-old will join an already huge international line-up in the Fury Men’s team with four Lithuanians, an Austrian, Greek and Bulgarian involved in the squad.

Having won a place on the British Basketball Glasgow Rocks pro team roster in season 2015-2016, Matrakov developed into an integral member of the team in the latter stages of that season, with mounting injuries providing him with the platform to make his mark.

During the high-pressure final seven games of the season, Matrakov helped the Rocks secure a play-off spot by averaging 8.7 points per game in an average court time of 19 minutes.

His most impressive cameo came when he chalked up 14 points against Sheffield Sharks in front of the BBC cameras. Season 2017-2018 proved even better for Matrakov who was a starting five player for the Glasgow side when their Scottish stars were at the Commonwealth Games in April.

Having not agreed a contract for season 2018-2019 the Bulgarian has joined Fury – the most successful team in the past six seasons in the Scottish Men’s Division 1 League with nine titles during that period.

Fury head coach John Bunyan commented on the signing by telling the Falkirk Herald: “Boris has trained with our team and immediately settled in with the players and our style of play.

“He is athletic, has a great understanding of the game and is an excellent threat from the perimeter – but key for me is he seems a genuine team player. All our players were very supportive of me trying to get Boris on board when we realised he may be available. This is a significant boost to the team and I look forward to working with him as we strive for honours this season.”

Matrakov is likely to make his Fury debut against Blaze this Friday and will join former Rocks players Keith Bunyan and Adam Hammerschmidt in a side that now has considerable strength in depth.
