Two of the Great Britain mens basketball players at a a short training camp in Worcester this week have Fury backgrounds.
Kieron Achara and Ali Fraser were both invited on Tuesday and joined by fellow Scot, Gareth Murray in competing for final team spots.
Their task has been made easier with yesterday’s news that several NBA players – Luel Deng of the Cleveland Cavaliers - the potential destination next season for Lebron James; 7ft Byron Mullins of the 76’rs and Joel Freeland of the PortlandTrailblazers have withdrawn.
The first preparation games against Latvia will take place on Saturday and Sunday at the University of Worcester Arena. These will be the only opportunities to see GB in action in this country before the all-important EuroBasket qualifiers in August.
Achara has been a key contributor for GB, playing in the 2012 Olymics, but for Fraser and Murray who both made the team in Euro competition last season and Achara, this is without doubt a very tough ask to make the final team and the Scots will have to be at their best to make the 12.
There are two further preparation games in Belgium against a team who finished 9th in EuroBasket 2013 and a Four-Nation tournament in Tbilisi, where GB will take on Belarus, Moldova and Georgia.
The qualifiers get underway when GB visit Iceland on Sunday, August 10 for the opening competitive game.
