With just a few days to go until Christmas Day, Royal Mail is getting in the festive spirit by revealing the UK’s 40 favourite festive house names.

The popular Christmas carol, ‘The Holly and the Ivy’ has no doubt helped propel these evergreen favourites to the top of the list.

Holly appears on 9353 homes in the UK, while ivy adorns 6926.

Those looking for chestnuts roasting on an open fire’ won’t be disappointed with Chestnuts third on the top 40, appearing 4,14 times across the country.

In Scotland, the ‘G’ (Glasgow) postcode area has the highest concentration of festive street names. Holly tops the list, appearing in eight Glasgow addresses. In Edinburgh (EH postcode area) and Dundee (DD postcode area), Ivy tops the list.

Royal Mail unearthed the top festive house names in the UK after analysing its Postcode Address File which contains 29.3 million home and business addresses.

Those on the lookout for Rudolph should head over to Waterlooville in Hampshire PO7 as he may be hiding in one of the 12 homes there that bear his name.

When it comes to accommodation for Joseph and Mary this Christmas Eve, they certainly don’t need to worry as there are plenty of Bethlehems (69) and Stables (4287).

Poplar in East London E14 has the highest concentration of Bethlehems (29) with Chartham in Kent CT4, housing the most stables (35).

Christmas film classics ‘‘The Snowman’’ and ‘‘Elf’’ have also made their mark on the housing landscape.

Snowman can be found on 103 addresses across the country while Elf hangs proudly on 23.

Steve Rooney, head of Royal Mail’s address management unit, said: “At Christmas time, we deliver millions of letters and parcels to over 27 million homes, so we understand the tough job that faces Santa.

‘‘These seasonal house names add a bit of fun into the day.

“For anyone who is still to post their cards or presents, remember that the last posting date for Second Class is Saturday, December 19, and for First Class, Monday, December 21.”
