New date announced for 2021 Isle of Wight Festival - and line-up news

The Isle of Wight Festival has been a staple of the summer music scene for thousands of festival-goers since its 2002 revival.

The festival, at Seaclose Park outside Newport, has become an annual event, drawing crowds in excess of 50,000 each year.

Some of music’s biggest names, including Paul Weller, David Bowie, The Who and Queen, have performed at the festival.

And, after a year off due to the Covid pandemic in 2020, organisers remain hopeful the festival will make a return in 2021.

Will the Isle of Wight Festival 2021 go ahead?

Under the government’s current Covid restrictions, there is a ban in place on mass gatherings to stop the spread of the deadly virus.

Yet the improving situation across the UK, largely thanks to the coronavirus vaccination programme, has led to a rethink in policy.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson outlined his roadmap out of a third national lockdown, which included four important dates for a gradual relaxing of rules.

The easing of restrictions lead up to 21 June when it is hoped all legal limits on social contact will be removed - paving the way for festivals and live events to take place.

When is the 2021 Isle of Wight Festival?

The 2021 festival was due to take place days before the 21 June target date set out by the government - leading to a change in thinking from organisers.

Rather than taking place at the start of summer, the Isle of Wight Festival will be moved to the end of summer in 2021 in the hope of full crowds attending.

In 2021, the Isle of Wight Festival is scheduled to take place between 16-19 September.

“The Isle of Wight Festival is a summer staple and two years without being together on the island is too long,” read a statement from the organisers. “That’s why we’re so excited to announce that we’re moving the festival to 16th-19th September 2021.”

Who is in the line-up for the 2021 Isle of Wight Festival?

Organisers hope to bring back as many of the artists as possible for the later dates.

Lionel Richie, Lewis Capaldi and Duran Duran were booked to headline the event, which originated as a 1960s counterculture gathering before being revived in 2002.

“We’re thrilled to be able to welcome everyone to the island in September,” the organisers’ statement continued.

“We’re aiming to bring back as many of the artists as we can but whatever happens, rest assured, you’ll enjoy a stellar line-up over the festival weekend. It will be the perfect place to see out the summer in spectacular fashion.

“The Isle of Wight Festival is always guaranteed to provide unforgettable moments. It’s standing arm in arm with fellow festivalgoers in Seaclose Park. It’s watching the sun go down over the Main Stage, cheering as the fireworks light up the sky.

“It’s revelling in over 50 years of musical history and discovering incredible new artists. It’s experiencing the inherently magical island atmosphere. It’s making friends for life and memories to last a lifetime.”
