Business Minister Fergus Ewing has outlined the actions being taken in Falkirk and other areas affected by the closure, which is scheduled for the end of the month.

Mr Ewing said: “We are committed to supporting sustainable and inclusive economic growth across Scotland. Our continued investment in infrastructure, regeneration and business support is helping to support economic growth and safeguard jobs across Falkirk and the surrounding areas.

“We are making substantial investments in health facilities, education facilities, and road and rail projects and communities across the area have also benefited from our regeneration funds.”

Last year Longannet operators Scottish Power revealed the future of the plant was in doubt following National Grid’s decision not to award the station a contract for grid balancing services.
