Work begins to replace historic footbridge
A historic footbridge which has served as a river crossing for generations of villagers is being replaced next week.
As part of Falkirk Council’s structural maintenance programme Bonnybridge’s Ford Footbridge, located near the Memorial Park, will be removed and a modern crossing erected in its place.
The bridge was one of the first built to allow residents to cross the Bonny Water.
Baillie Billy Buchanan voiced concern this week that such a historic structure was going to be lost forever. While he accepted the old bridge could not be refurbished, he felt it should be stored somewhere for future generations to see.
A council spokesman said: “The repair works are necessary to maintain Falkirk Council’s bridge stock and for the safety of the public.”

A temporary footbridge closure sign will be in place for the duration of the work, which started on Monday and is scheduled to run until March 27, with a pedestrian diversion route over a nearby bridge.
