Where advancing years are just numbers

Having mentioned recently how weather can adversely affect BB events, I was somewhat apprehensive when on February 7 the rain was blowing horizontally in torrents in near freezing temperatures on the very day when members the Falkirk and District Stedfast Association were to attend their annual church service.

Inside the venue things were warm and welcoming but even the regular worshippers at Larbert West Church seemed thin on the ground as the time for worship approached. But then with less than 15 minutes before start time around 20 or so members, some approaching 90 years old, started to arrive; drookit and cold, but of a generation when diligence in following through is paramount. There they were warmly welcomed by the Rev Dr Campbell Campbell-Jack who led the service in conjunction with Jack Thomson and Helen Henderson from the Larbert Churches Youth Trust which works in the Larbert Area Schools with just such youngsters with whom the BB seeks to engage.

Fellowship after the service as well as being warm in the traditional sense was all the more so with hot soup and rolls, monetary contributions for which would be applied to help with the work of Trust. Having renewed their friendships, the members departed resolving to meet at a games night later in February and a weekend away in March, after stewarding for the battalion at the annual TurnaBBouT Event. Age it seems is only a number to these stalwarts!

Officers in the Battalion are reminded of the Scottish Conference to be held in the Bankfoot Church Centre in Perthshire on Saturday, March 5.
